Ambi Climate 2 review: Smart cooling

Ambi Climate 2

While some newer aircon models come with smart features, the older models usually don’t. The Ambi Climate 2 turns your aircon smart, by not only letting you control it via an app, but also automatically adjusts the temperature to suit your tastes. I’ve been using the Ambi Climate 2 for a few years now, and it’s something I can’t not have for sleeping cool at night.

Quick specs

  • Wi-Fi support 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n-24
  • 110g
  • Sensors for temperature, humidity, and luminosity

The Ambi Climate 2 works by using its built-in infrared controller to turn on and adjust the temperature. It can also control the fan speeds and the movement of the louvre. It supports a wide range of aircons, especially from popular brands such as Mitsubishi Electric (the one I have at home). You’ll need to keep it in sight range of your aircon unit, so it can send its signals. Using the app, you can also set timers to turn off the aircon unit, and remotely turn your aircon on, even when not at home.

There are a few modes to choose from when using the Ambi Climate 2: Manual, Away, Temperature, and Comfort. Each mode does things differently. Manual lets you set the temperature like a non-smart aircon. Away lets you set a desired room temperature, with the aircon turning on when needed to maintain that temperature. Temperature lets you set a target, with the Ambi Climate adjusting the aircon settings to achieve that.

Lastly, Comfort uses machine learning and AI to learn your preferences, and tweaks the room temperature accordingly. You teach the AI by telling it if it’s too cold or too hot, and it learns the best setting. It’s my most used mode, and I really like how I don’t have to wake up shivering in the morning. I also like the finish of the Ambi Climate 2. It’s made of plastic, but the bottom has a nice wooden base to give it a premium touch. You can place it almost anywhere and it won’t look out of place. There’s also a spare USB port if you need to power other devices, such as a security camera.

The Ambi Climate 2 retails for US$149 on the official store, which is about S$200. You can get it cheaper on Lazada for around S$189. Each Ambi Climate 2 unit will only control one aircon, so grab a few for multiple rooms. To keep costs down, I suggest only getting it for areas where you frequently use the aircon.
